It is hard to imagine a time when flavors such as wildberry lavender, Bangkok peanut and salty caramel were non existent to the ice cream scene. Ten years ago, ordering an small waffle cone with frankincense and almond cake would have triggered some strange looks. However, one Columbus entrepreneur tested flavor limits and went beyond basic vanilla to create what is now an ice cream empire.
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is both the vision and creation of Jeni Britton Bauer and husband, Charly Bauer. Started in 2002, Jeni’s specializes in high-quality ingredients with artisan ice cream flavors. Although prices for a scoop may be a bit steep and the lines a little long, customers gladly shell out time and money to taste the creative flavors.
Since opening their first store, Jeni’s has grown in popularity. With 11 stores throughout Ohio and Tennessee and products sold in grocery stores and online across America, Jen’s is quickly becoming a staple in ice cream consumption. Plus, if you want to try your hand at some “out there” flavors, Jeni’s has a cookbook full of over 100 recipes you can make at home!
While some see it as just ice cream, Jeni’s is much more. It is a true artistic experience. Whether you drive by Jeni’s on a hot and sunny day or on one that is frigid and snowy, there will always be a crowd of people waiting to step foot in the modern-day ice cream parlor and taste what the buzz is about.
